Original Medicare is the most basic form of Medicare there is and consists of two pieces, Part A (hospital costs) and Part B (other health related costs). This is the coverage you receive from the federal government when you turn 65, and though it provides protection from some medical expenses, it does not cover 100% of all the medical costs you might face (prescription drug costs, for example).

This plan helps “fill in the gaps” of your Original Medicare and is the most comprehensive type of coverage available. Also known as Medigap, Medicare Supplemental insurance, adds protection to your policy for expenses such as extended hospital stays, skilled nursing costs, and can help pay your Medicare deductibles.

Medicare Advantage is a different kind of plan provided by private insurance companies who become the primary healthcare payor.
